Chapter Six - Helen

“I’m working outside of the office today, Max,” Helen informed him over the phone as she sat in the coffee shop, her legs folded beneath her. Her free hand typed across the keyboard of her laptop as she compiled her latest report for her boss. Over the last few days, she managed to read through the newest case copies from the police station about the other cases linked to the motel murders.

She was initially frustrated that she missed them, but realized they occurred before the motel murders became highly publicized and her boss assigned her to cover them.

“That’s fine, as long as you have that report finished for me by the end of the day,” he barked over the phone. “We also need a story to publish for tomorrow! I need-”

“I’ve already sent a story update to the editing team,” Helen interrupted him, and he went silent. “I also wrote the piece about the old people who gather in the park and do yoga, if you want to run that one.”

“It seems like you planned this ahead of time,” he said accusingly.

“I did,” she stated with a shrug. There was no use lying about it. She was tired of sitting in the stuffy office and having her work interrupted every few minutes. It was too distracting, and she couldn’t be productive in that environment. “Email me anything else you need me to do.”

“I will. Enjoy your day.”

It only took Helen a few more minutes to finish off the report, and she immediately sent it in. Since Max hadn’t emailed her any other tasks yet, she switched tactics and logged into HookUp.

Helen had been a member of the site for months now, initially using it to find men to screw. Now, she scanned through the ads, questions lingering in her mind. Was one of these people going to be the next victim?

A throat cleared beside her and startled, Helen jumped and looked up.

Detective Douglas stood behind the chair next to her, a coffee in one hand and his phone in the other. He wore dark blue jeans that sagged ever so slightly around his waist, and a baggy blue shirt. His arms were exposed, and the bulge in them confirmed her earlier observation; the detective had a great body. Her gaze couldn’t help but move to his groin, which had a pronounced bulge.

She shook the dirty thoughts from her mind and raised her eyebrows at him. “Detective.”

“Ms. Barrington.” He motioned to the seat beside her. “May I?”

The word no was beginning to form on her lips, but then Helen realized this was her chance to get more information on the case. Sure, she had pages of information from the case files, but none of them contained theories or leads; only the detective could give her those. So instead, she nodded, and he took the seat.

So close to him, she could feel his warmth. “Call me Helen.”

“Helen,” he said quietly. She did her best not to show how much she liked the sound of her name on his lips.
